23rd  June 2023

Dear Families,

Another warm week with a few thunderstorms but the show must go on! We were excited to have Year 1 start our term of Summer Productions and today Year 3 did a brilliant job at performing their show also!

RSE Workshop

On  Thursday 6th July we will be holding a Relationship and Sex Education workshop (RSE) where we will look at what each year group (Year 1-Year 6) will be learning during RSE week. Then the  following week all children across the school will be accessing their RSE curriculum. If you are interested in the scheme we follow (Christopher Winter) and the resources we used-please click on the links:

Reports and Parents Evenings

On July 14th your child's school reports will be sent home and then on Monday 17th we be holding parent drop-ins after school for those who wish to meet with their child's current teacher to discuss the report. There is one exception to this - Year 2's report will be going out on Monday 3rd July and their parent teacher drop-ins will be on Tuesday 4th after school.

Strike Days

July the 5th and 7th are the planned  NEU strike days - as you will be aware teachers do not need to inform us beforehand, if they are striking or not. There is a plan by the NEU members to create a picket line, so based on the previous time this happened, we will probably be shut in Nursery, Reception, Year 1, Year 2, Year 4 and Year 5 and there will be no wrap around care. Closer to the time when we know more, we will email you.

Because of the strike days we will be moving Year 5's production for families to Tuesday 4th of July at 9.30am - we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Wind Rush Day                                                                        Thursday 22nd June

The year 2023 marks the 75th year of the arrival of the Empire Windrush to Britain’s shores. This historic and celebratory year will mark a significant milestone in the lives of thousands of British citizens of Caribbean descent. At school we have held discussions and an assembly to commerate the day.

Rainbow Day                                                             Friday 30th June

Rainbow Day

Next Friday we will have a 'Rainbow Day' where we invite everybody to wear bright colours and we will ask for a donation of a pound to raise money for purchasing books for our library. In Year 6, as part of the Harvey Milk Pride unit, the children have been researching many different types of families that exist in our community and beyond; they will be sharing what they have learnt in assembly for the rest of the school.

After school the Year 6 children will be selling their brilliant rainbow products - both edible and non edibles! This money will go to a charity of their choice and also towards their end of year celebration.

Year 6 have created a market research survey to help them prepare for the day - please complete it so they can use it to plan what products to make!

Thank a teacher day!

For Parents and Pupils - Thank a Teacher

On Wednesday was the "National Thank a Teacher Day!"

This is a great time for us to share as a school how much we appreciate every member of staff as without you all, it wouldn't be JKPS!

100 Kind Things

Thank you for all being involved in the acts of kindness for Judith kerr's 100th birthday. We have had a fabulous week building our list of 100 kind things we have been doing and also what you have been doing at home!

Please read below to see what the children have been up to!

Nursery and Reception

This week the children across EYFS have been thinking about the different ways they can show kindness to others. They have read the story ‘The Koala Who Could’. It’s all about a koala who needs some help to be brave and try new things. The koalas' friends are really kind and help Kevin the koala to come down from the tree and they show him all the amazing things they can do together. During their PSED lessons the children talked to Kevin, our class koala, about how they might help each other to try new things and how they might show kindness to each other.

Here are some wonderful examples of their ideas.

“ I want to learn how to speak Russian so I can talk to my friend in my class and tell her about everything.”
“ I can teach you the rules to football so we can play football together outside”
“ I can show you how to draw the Pokémon characters”

Well done everyone!. You have been really kind to each other and Kevin the koala

Year 1 and Year 2

In Year 1 and 2, we have been reading the story "the jar of happiness." This then created an opportunity for us to create our own jars and nominate children who have been kind to others!

This has given us the opportunity to think about how we can recognise kindness and celebrate it so we can do more!

Some random acts of kindness examples:

"Helping my friend with their maths cause they couldn't do it."

"I helped the teacher to tidy everything away."

"They were sad. I gave them a hug."

What wonderful kindness Year 1 and 2!

In Year 1, Caspar has taken kindness into his own hands at home by completing jobs around the house, ensuring every visitor is comfortable by providing cushions and even picking up litter in the local area.

Well done Caspar!

Year 3 and Year 4

Year 5 and 6

Year 6 went to Reception and had a fantastic afternoon helping  them to create their kindness chatterboxes, while also doing something kind in the process!
They also did some kind things at home!

Friends Corner

We hope you all had a great time at the Summer Picnic last Saturday. The day was a great success, with the children enjoying the games, music, and theatre. We believe we have raised over £3000 which will go towards great causes and events in the school for the benefit of the kids. This was thanks to all the amazing volunteers and support from the parent community, we couldn’t do it without you. Some of the highlights below.

Inaugural Judith Kerr Bake Off

The turn-out was fantastic, with a high standard of cakes presented by the kids (and parents 😊) Dozens of cakes were judged by a select group of cake aficionados  and first place awarded to Mia (Year 4) who created a special chocolate creation with Kit Kat wrapping and truffle toppings.

Raffle Prize Winners

The local business response to our Summer Picnic Raffle was fantastic and over 20 prizes were on offer with the prize winners across all the years. Thank you to Lorna and Jemima for organising such a great event.

Face Painting

Liz and Kristy led a group of volunteers in the creation of wonderful artwork on the children’s faces which brought an added layer of colour to the picnic.

Year 5 Fundraising

Well done to Year 5’s saavy stall providing refreshment and crafting. The elderflower cordial with fruit skewers were a huge success, and what began as a pile of stones became an art installation worthy of the Tate.

 New Water Fountain

Back in January we collected £800 for Laurie’s and Shivali’s leaving present. They kindly decided to donate this money back to school to support the purchase and installation of a new much needed water bottle filling station.

Thank you again Laurie & Shivali for all you hard work as co-chairs of the Friends!

Mog Theatre Trip - Tuesday 18th July.

We are looking for volunteers to help get the children to and from the Old Vic Theatre. If you would like to see the production as well, we have managed to secure tickets for all volunteers, allocated by year.

You can buy here: https://www.fojkps.org/buynow/mog-adult-volunteer-tickets. If you would like to accompany the children without seeing the show, you are very welcome to. Just add your name to the form via the above link.

 Second hand uniform

The volunteers, led by Daniela, did a great job of setting up the second hand uniform stalls at the Summer Picnic. We have also set up a way to access second hand uniform in between our termly sales.
