Friday 20th  October 2023

Dear Families,

Happy end of half-term! Thank you for all your support. It has been a tricky term, adjusting to capacity with the high absence of staff and I thank you for your support and being so understanding.  I want to say a big thank you also to our staff team, who have rallied around, being proactive and helpful in supporting us to deliver the best education possible for the children.

Thank you to all the parents who came to the gallery yesterday and purchased all the artists' work.

There is still time to purchase artwork online by following the link below. The online gallery will close on Sunday 29th October at 9pm.

Black History Month

The children attended a special assembly yesterday where they shared the poetry they wrote for Black History Month. We were so impressed with the thoughtful poems the children created and how they captured the achievements of a variety of inspirational Black women in their poems.

Year 3 explored the lives of Mary Seacole and Ruby Bridges

Year 4 used their book 'Undefeated' as a model for their poems, which saluted a range of inspirational Black figures.

Year 5 created Bio poems about British athlete, Dina Asher-Smith; British Space Scientist, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock and Stem Scientist Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE

Year 6 have been learning about the Windrush generation this half-term and they created poems about Windrush and Claudia Jones, who helped set up Notting Hill Carnival.

Some travel housekeeping:

JKPS encourages families to walk, wheel, bike, scoot or use public transport, especially as our school is in a polluted area. If you need to drive to school please remember to check if a parking space is a disabled bay before using it, as some of our families really rely on those spaces.

And if you arrive by bike please can you dismount and walk the last bit of your journey instead of cycling on the pavement, to ensure the safety of everyone arriving and leaving school.

A reminder that we operate a one-way system at drop-off and pick-up, please make sure you enter through the big gates at drop-off and then exit through the small one by the zebra crossing. Then reverse that at pick-up! This helps to reduce congestion at the gates.

Friends Corner

Hello lovely JKPS Families,

FoJKPS are pleased to be hosting the traditional German celebration of Sankt Martin's Day on our school grounds again. On Friday 10th November from 4:30pm to 5:30pm all JKPS children and their families are invited to gather around a bonfire with their lanterns. We will provide refreshments and a bite to eat for the kids and will be singing some traditional German Sankt Martin songs.

Some information for those of you not familiar with the tradition of Sankt Martin's: The tradition came about in honour of the benevolence of a Roman knight, Martin of Tours, who shared his cloak with a beggar on a cold evening, and reinforces the idea of empathy and sharing. Children will be familiar with this story from school discussions.

Lanterns:
Reception children will be making lanterns at school.  All other years can make their lanterns at home or purchase a paper lantern on Thursday, 9th of November, at pick-up time from the Friends. All children can collect a lantern stick and LED tea light to put in their lantern at the start of the event for free.

There are many ways you can make the lanterns that are all easy and fun.  Here are some tutorials you may wish to follow:

Refreshments:
We will serve warm spiced apple juice along with a small raisin bun for all kids for free.

Songs:
If you would like to practise singing at home with your child in the weeks leading up to the event the songs listed below will also be practised in school.

(Durch die Straßen auf und nieder, inc lyrics)

If you play an instrument and would like to accompany the singing, please let your class rep know!

Charity:
The Beaver and Cub Scouts meeting at JKPS are holding a coat drive for the month of November in coordination with WrapUp London.  New and used coats are being collected at school for the entire month of November.  Last year we took over 70 warm winter coats to be distributed, and it was a great way to tie together the story Sankt Martin and the practice of charity.

We would be grateful if you could support the event with a small donation, either on the day or via the FoJKPS website. Donations will cover the costs of the refreshments, the lantern sticks, and the lights. Thanks very much.

Almost time for a collective exhale as we reach half term. What a great few weeks it has been, with the highlight of Oktoberfest and so many wonderful school and Friends’ run events. We cannot do it without all the energy and enthusiasm of the parents and carers, so a huge ‘Thank You’ to you all! Enjoy the week off and we will see you next term with a few events already in the pipeline as below.

🍁Our St Martin Lantern Parade will be on Friday 10th November, 4:30pm - 6pm.

We will celebrate the benevolence of St Martin with lanterns, bonfire, singing, hot buns and warm apple juice on the school grounds on 10th November from 4:30pm. The scouts will be running a coat drive around the same time as well. More details will be sent closer to the time.

🍁Community WhatsApp channel

A reminder that we have a WhatsApp community where we only post the main announcements that go out via the class reps. It’s a way to keep information easy to find, as class groups can get quite busy at times with other messages. You can join it here.

We hope you like our new noticeboard by the main gate. Watch this space, we will be adding more info to it soon! To find out more about us or to get involved, head to fojkps.org or email us at fojkps@gmail.com.
