Friday 26th September 2025

Dear Families,

Wunderbar! What a brilliant community event our Oktoberfest was!
A huge thank you to all the volunteers who generously gave their time to make the day such a success—not only as a chance to come together and have fun, but also as an important fundraising event. And rumour has it… a sausage record was broken! You can read all about it in the latest Mog Chronicle article.

Parent/Carer–Teacher Meetings
Next week, we’ll be holding meetings for all classes in the top floor hall. Here’s what you can expect:

  • A short 10-minute catch-up with your child’s class teacher

  • An update on how your child has settled into the new school year, with a focus on learning behaviours

  • Suggestions on how you can support your child’s learning at home

To help everything run smoothly, please try to keep within the allotted time. If you’d like to discuss anything in more depth, you’re welcome to arrange a separate meeting with the teacher.

We’re really looking forward to seeing you all then!

Schönes Wochenende!

Patrick

Key messages:

Important safeguarding notice for after-school clubs: to support us with our safeguarding procedures, if your child is attending after-school club and you need to collect early, please ensure you inform the office team so that we can inform the club leaders.

Safeguarding notice: some of our parents attending the Southwark Safer Streets meeting earlier this week were notified of an increase in phone theft in the local area. Please be vigilant when using your phones. The met advise to always put your phone away while walking, and to walk on the inside of the pavement, so you’re further away from the road to help mitigate risk.

This week's stars! Well done to these children for living up to our JKPS values and being such role models for the school!

This week marked the start of Fairtrade fortnight and in assembly this afternoon we had some discussion about what this means, why it's so important, and how our choices at home can make a positive difference to people across the world.

This could be a great opportunity for discussion if you're travelling the supermarket aisles with your child this weekend!

Years 5 and 6 also enjoyed learning about Fairtrade today and created these impressive posters.

More about Fairtrade from Eco-Council soon.

What's happening in school

As part of our PSHE curriculum, we love exploring different cultures! This week, our Early Years and KS1 pupils had a fantastic time learning about African drums. We were lucky to welcome Wuntanara, who ran an engaging workshop all about drumming.

We discovered that Wuntanara means “we are together”—a lovely reminder of the importance of teamwork. The group celebrates and promotes West African music, dance, and culture in primary schools across London, and our pupils were thrilled to join in.

We drummed, we danced, and we learnt about rhythm! Here’s what some of our Year 1 pupils thought:

  • David: “I give it 10 stars because I really liked drumming!”

  • Luke: “I give it so many stars because it was extremely good to beat the drum to the rhythm!”

  • Kaia: “I give it 5 out of 5 stars because it was fun—even if my hand hurt beating the African drums!”

We can’t wait for Wuntanara to return and share their energy and passion with KS2!

A warm welcome to Jaakko Kooroshy, joining our ACC as our new Parent/Carer Champion, and Oliver Schmitz as our new German Champion. Oliver Schmitz is Headteacher of the German School in Richmond and we are extremely excited to look forward to forging new links with our schools and having Oliver's strategic support with our German provision.

Smartphone Cautious - talk on Tuesday 18th November

The JKPS parent-led Smartphone-Cautious group has organised a parent talk, with Papaya Talks, about technology use in our families. The talk will be held on Tuesday 18th November in the lunch hall, from 7:30pm. Called “Let's Talk about Our Kids and Their Tech: Finding a Healthy Balance for Your Family”, it will explore some of the mental health problems associated with excessive technology use and how we can achieve a healthier balance with technology for our families. The non-judgmental talk will cover evidence around the impact of smartphones and social media on children, and solutions for both those who have smartphones and those who don’t.

Attendance

School attendance is mandatory for all students of compulsory school age. Whilst we understand that it isn't always possible to reach 100% attendance, we are fully committed to ensuring the highest levels of attendance to ensure we enable every student to meet their potential.

Friends Corner

Oktoberfest
Vielen dank an Alle involved in Oktoberfest, from every member of the organising committee, through every cake baker to all who did a shift or picked up litter on Sunday afternoon. None of it could be delivered without the volunteers. The weather held (just), and despite the hints of rain great fun was had all round with over 1,450 sausages, 600 slices of cake, 800 pretzels and around 2,300 pints of beer sold. We hope to be able to share the final amount raised next week.
Funding from Oktoberfest 2024 was central to the opening of the new SEN Room and the (soon to be delivered) Early Years Space. With the unrestricted funds we get from this sort of fundraising event we have also supported the productive garden, outside play equipment, forthcoming anti-racism workshops and books for the JKPS library. We have begun discussions with Mr Patrick and his team on this year's priorities and hope to update everyone soon. You can read all about our current projects on the Friends website: https://www.fojkps.org/future-projects
🤠👕 There is still a chance to pick up some merch (limited edition Steins, hoodies and t-shirts available until Sunday), place an order here: https://www.fojkps.org/shop
🥮🎂 Please don't forget to pick up your cake plate from school (very final deadline is Monday morning)
✍️✍️ If you have any feedback on the event or ideas on how to make it even better please get in touch
📣🍻 Planning has already started for next year - if you want to get involved please reach out to FoJKPS@gmail.com

Sankt Martin's Lantern Parade
With Oktoberfest over the next big event in the school calendar is a traditional Sankt Martin parade, complete with lanterns, bonfire, warm apple juice and singing. This is a community event, allowing the children to enjoy some traditional Austrian/German/Swiss culture. If you would like to get involved in the organising committee please get in touch.

Save the planet and your pocket, come along to the pre-loved uniform sale Thursday 2nd October 3:20-4:30pm.
