Dear Families,

A warm welcome back to all our families this week. It has been great seeing the children get straight back into their learning this week, reenergised from their break. And there's lots coming up this term, particularly in the second half of term, so do keep a close eye on the dates at the bottom of this newsletter.

This afternoon in our assembly, we explored the story of St George following St George's day on Wednesday. We learnt about how important it is to stand up for what is right and how much courage this can take. And did you know, St George wasn't English.

For the Portuguese members of our community, 'feliz dia de liberdade'! Find out more about why 25th April is such a significant day in Portugal's history - click here. 'E buon 25 aprile' to our Italian community who might be celebrating Festa della Liberazione today. Both celebrations important reminders of why we should never take our liberty for granted.

Medical Information: Thank you to those of you updated your MychildatSchool profile before the Easter. If you have not yet done so, please update your profile by going to MyChildatSchool - 'Admission Form' - Scroll down to 'Medical' - Click on the drop down for 'Linked surgery' - If the Surgery that your child attends is not visible, click on 'other' it will give you an option to add a new surgery. Please check that your child's medical needs are correct.

Check out today's suggestion on the Action For Happiness calendar - Have a 'no screens' night and take time to recharge yourself. A challenge to us all, I am sure!

Science Week poster reminder

Thank you for all the fabulous posters that have come into school so far. Please note, there is still time to create a poster for the competition, guidance below:

Theme: Change and Adapt The theme for 2025 is 'Change and adapt,' inviting students to explore various STEM topics. Participants can create posters illustrating how plants and animals adapt to changing seasons or environments, human adaptations to evolving technology, climate change mitigation strategies, or their favourite science experiments demonstrating change. Creativity in interpreting the theme is encouraged!

Bring your poster in on Monday and hand it to your class teacher. 

What's happening in school

In their maths lessons, Year 2 have been busy measuring around school. 

For some fun home learning, ask them to estimate the length of different objects around home. Use language such us 'longer than, shorter than' and focus on meters and centimetres using a variety of measuring tools. 

Celebrating who we are! In Year 1 Religious Education, children have been learning about different religious symbols. They then reflected on why symbols are important and how they help people feel like they belong to a community. They designed their own symbol to celebrating what makes us...us and created a sunny theatre outside and presented our symbol to one another.

Inspired by their symbols, in PSHE they celebrated one another with shooting stars. They paired up and wrote kind statements about one another noticing kind acts within the classroom.

Attendance

School attendance is mandatory for all students of compulsory school age. Whilst we understand that it isn't always possible to reach 100% attendance, we are fully committed to ensuring the highest levels of attendance to ensure we enable every student to meet their potential.

From Ms Rebecca - news from our friends in Köln:

Over the half term, I was able to visit our partner school in Köln, where I caught up with our colleagues, delivered letters to the Year 5 pen pals, and got to know the Year 4 pen pals as well. I also got to take part in 'GGS Future Day', where the children were able to meet people who had lived in East Germany and ask them questions about what life was like there. They also learnt about the importance of Article 1 of the German Basic Law (Grundgesezt): 

Die Würde des Menschen ist unantastbar - Human dignity shall be inviolable

Afterwards, the Shark class created a banner about what they had learnt and the importance of democracy.

Reminder: we would like to invite parents to a feedback session to share results of the parent survey on Thursday 8th May at 5:30pm in school. We hope this is also an opportunity to meet with you to update on the roles currently active in ACC and put some faces to names.

Friends' Corner

Welcome back!

Over the Easter Holidays there was the building work on the new Sensory Room. The Friends contributed both the funding (£13,600) and project management. Massive thanks to Stef Weinmann for all the work on the design and getting it done. As well as the admin team who agreed to contribute some of their office, and everyone who participated in the fundraising including Oktoberfest 2024, the Teachers' Masked Singer event and individual donations.

The Sensory Room will be able to be accessed by every child in school if needed. Some children may need regular sessions whilst others may benefit from flexible usage - all of these things the school team will be exploring once it is in use. This supports inclusion across the school, and every child will benefit from an additional space to regulate their emotions and meet their sensory needs. 

Over the coming weeks the equipment will be ordered, and the plan is to have the room up and running after half term.
