(Newsletter Archive)

Dear Families,

Welcome back all!

Teachers are looking forward to our Racial Awarenes workshops next week, which form part of our Anti-Racism work. Over the next two weeks, Natalie from @Embrace will run Racial Identity Awareness sessions for all staff.

There will also be sessions for parent and carers. If you are interested in attending one of the sessions, click here for more information. We encourage as many of you as possible to take part as our work to tackle racism must be an effort from all our community. Numbers for each session will be limited, so we will provide additional sessions if needed. Register your interest here.

Don't forget to join us for our Sankt Martin's parade after school next Friday. We look forward to seeing many of you then!

Schönes Wochenende!

Patrick

Key messages:

Odd Socks Day! Next week is Anti-Bullying Week and on Monday 10th November we are encouraging the children to come to school in odd socks. This is a wonderful opportunity to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique!

🍁 GARDENING DAY - this Sunday, 9th November, 11am-3pm 🍁

🪴 Please feel very welcome to join us preparing the school garden for winter. Any pair of hands - little ones and big ones - are helpful, even for just 1/2 hour 🪴

Please join the Gardening Group at https://chat.whatsapp.com/EQ9MhwUbbLS6DLiUyZAQB2?mode=ems_copy_t

On Tuesday next week, we will be marking Remembrance Day with 2 minutes' silence at 11am. In assembly today, we discussed what Remembrance Day is and how important it is for us not to take our freedoms for granted. This also provided powerful links with our discussions from earlier in the year focused on the The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the book We Are All Born Free.

Eco School - Speed Watch

We are always campaigning for road safety!

Eco School took time to check the speed of local vehicles to see if they were following the 20 mph speed limit. 87% of cars/vehicles were speeding! Eco School will now write a letter to the local council to give this data and hopefully reduce the speed of cars/vehicles. We were impressed by the walkers and cyclists we saw - great for the environment.

Thank you to Celeste and Eliza our wonderful parent volunteers.

Remember speed limits keep us all safe!

We’re excited to be trialling a new book exchange scheme in classrooms.

Over the next week, each class will receive a dedicated book exchange box, where children can bring in good-quality books they no longer wish to keep and swap them for another book in the box. Children must check with you at home before bringing any books in. We want to make sure they are parting with books they’re happy to share with others, rather than just clearing out old ones. Once they’ve finished reading their new book, they are welcome to bring it back and exchange it again.

We hope this will encourage a love of reading and create a sense of shared ownership and excitement around books in every classroom.

What's happening in school

Our Early Years classes have been getting ready for next week's Sankt Martin's parade and are definitely on track for creating the cutest lanterns yet with their beautiful owl laterns!

If you thought you spotted some of our Year 6 children cycling on the roads this week, you weren't wrong. Well done to Kelly Holmes class who all completed their Level 2 Cycling Proficiency this week.

This week, Year 4 visited the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton. They explored the remarkable lives of Lewis Latimer, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Ira Aldridge, and Fanny Eaton. They used acting and artwork to bring these historical figures to life.

During their visit, the class also went on a local history walk along Railton Road, spotting significant landmarks such as the former homes of Olive Morris and Winifred Atwell, the celebrated pianist.

Back at school, Year 4 rounded off their learning by creating a large collaborative mural, inspired by the community murals they studied in Brixton.

Safeguarding

Next week is anti-bullying week. There is no place for bullying and we all need to stand up to it together. Learning to understand and manage conflict is an important part of growing up. Bullying is not simply a 'falling out'. Research shows that experiencing bullying can have a significant impact on a child's life well into adulthood. To ensure we are able to prevent bullying, act quickly when it takes place and avoid misidentifying bullying, it is vital that schools and other settings have a shared definition of bullying. There are lots of resources available to prompt discussion about bullying with your child. School attendance is mandatory for all students of compulsory school age. Whilst we understand that it isn't always possible to reach 100% attendance, we are fully committed to ensuring the highest levels of attendance to ensure we enable every student to meet their potential.

Friends Corner

Planning
The Friends are in full swing and planning for St Martin's and Crhistmas - but as ever we need your help:
📅 Dates are available: https://www.fojkps.org/events

🎉 If there is an event you are interested in running for the Friends, or something else you'd like to get involved in, please always get in touch

St Martin Lantern Parade
The traditional St Martin Lantern Parade is on Friday 14 November. This German, Austrian and Swiss tradition is a magical early evening celebrating our JKPS community spirit with lots of lights, music and a warm drink.  And back by popular demand is a proper parade. Please sign up to help out here: https://legacy.signup.zone/99XZS8rTN4A8MGMHX
The early years will be having a lantern workshop in school before the event. Everybody else is invited to craft their own lantern at home and there will be paper lanterns on sale on the day as well.
On the night the Friends will provide a bun and warm apple juice for all children. In addition there will be sticks, tea lights and mulled wine on offer for a small donation.
Member of the Friends Committee
Are you interested in getting more involved in the Friends? We're looking for one/two (co-)Secretary to join our organising committee and be a trustee of the charity. We're particularly looking for someone who loves organising stuff who can help us stay on track.
St Nikolaus Tag Fair and Raffle
If you would like to get involved in organising the St Nikolaus Tag Fair, please reach out to Stef or Claire, or e-mail FoJKPS@gmail.com. We're also excited to have some external stall holders this year - if you, anyone you know, or your children would like to have a stall please get in touch.
A huge thank you to the businesses in our community who have already supported the Friends, in particular at Oktoberfest. We are organising a raffle for the St Nikolaus Tag Fair, if you or anyone you know has a raffle prize to contribute please get in touch.
We have also started a LinkedIn Group for the Friends of JKPS so we can see the skills and experience in our community as we work as the Friends to support JKPS. Please join here: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13226102/
Christmas Cards and Trees
The Christmas Card Proofs should be back with the children. Please place your order by 10pm on Thursday 13th November, the website is here https://sforders.co.uk/
If you can not find your PIN please get in touch with Claire Wren on 07730-433-519 who can help.

Get more branch for your buck here: https://www.fojkps.org/shop/p/christmas-trees-2025-ssafn
And please share with neighbours who can also take advantage of this good deal.

Let's talk about our kids and their tech

We have Ruth Smith coming in to lead a discussion on the parent challenges of smartphones, social media and screentime in a non-judgemental way, and give practical advice on how to achieve a healthier technology balance. There will be drinks from the bar for a small donation. Come along Tuesday 18th November at 7:30pm.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Thank you to everyone who picked up lost property at the end of term. We're keen to stay on top of it, please regularly take a moment to check for items - you would be amazed what reappears.

Anything labelled has a far higher chance of being returned! You can buy labels through a company that will donate a small amount to the Friends, details here (scroll down): https://www.fojkps.org/donate

Please donate your pre-loved uniform. Particularly fleeces, and jumpers/cardigans size 28/30. We are also pleased to accept crocs/similar and Christmas Jumpers. Please ensure everything you donate is saleable, in particular checking cuffs for wear and tear.
