Friday 6th September 2024

Dear Families,

A warm welcome back to all our families, and an extremely warm welcome to new children and their families joining us this year. We have new faces - teachers and children - throughout the school, and it has been fabulous to see everyone settle in so well. And a particular well done to our new Nursery and Reception children who have been enjoying their 'stay and plays' this week; we can't wait for you to all join full-time and for Reception's traditional Schultüte Parade next Friday!

Please see below for some key messages and dates for what's coming up.

Schönes Wochenende!

Patrick

Key messages:

PE days: in advance of our Curriculum Meetings next week, so that you are aware, PE days are as follows: Years 1 & 2 on Wednesdays; Years 3 & 4 on Thursdays; Years 5 & 6 on Fridays. (Children should come into school in their PE kits on these days.)

Punctuality: please do aim to ensure that your child is in school by 8:50am. After this time, we will close the side doors and they will need to come in through the office. After 9am, they will be registered as late.

Lost property: ensure all personal items that the children bring into school are clearly labelled so that we can return them in case they get lost. Lost property items are currently being left on the shelves to the left of the office.

Snacks: children in KS1 and KS2 are encouraged to bring in a snack for breaktime. Ensure that all snacks are healthy, use minimal packaging and don't contain nuts or sesame seeds.

For lining up at the end of the day, please see the adjacent map.

Staffing Updates

We are currently advertising for a German teacher. Feel free to share this link if you know of anyone who might be interested: https://mynewterm.com/jobs/139907/EDV-2024-JKPS-23303

Subject to references,  this week we appointed a new caretaker who we hope will be starting with us in the next couple of weeks.

Ms Keziah and Ms Alice are currently teaching Yr3 Ruby Bridges Class in Ms Georgia D's absence.

Meet the team: if you're wondering who's who at Judith Kerr, visit the Meet the staff  section on our website.

This week in school, children have been exploring what we mean by identity, creating their own self-portraits and starting some of the English texts for the term.

Deutschecke

We are having a soft start to our German sessions as the children have been immersed in their identity units this week. Sessions will begin next week, with Andrea from the Goethe Institut starting the following week.

Please note our current vacancy for a German Teacher, in case you know of anyone who might be interested.

The wonder of languages is that they often have untranslatable words. Here's rather a fabulous example: Waldeinsamkeit

Loosely translated, it refers to the feeling one has while being alone in the woods, usually a sublime or spiritual one.

Feel free to send in any other words you know that don't have literal translations into English and we can share them next week.

German learning is not just for the kids! An online german class has been set up just for our JKPS parents and carers, so we can learn German together. Classes will start online mid-September on Monday evenings and costs £150 for a 10 week course. There will be 2 groups - beginners and a more advanced group - depending on the level of the people that sign up. To find out more and to book your place, contact: susanne@germanteacher.uk.

*Susanne Wardle operates externally from JKPS.

Friends Corner

Welcome back everyone and welcome to the new parents joining the JKPS community.

First thing’s first - 🎉 we’re holding a Social Event on Wednesday 11 Sept at 8pm in the Half Moon Pub. Everyone is welcome, whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or you’ve just joined the school and you’re wondering who we are and how to pronounce our acronym (FOJKPS). Come and find out what we’ve got planned for the year.

🍄Gardening Day Sunday 15 Sept 11am - 3pm Don’t forget your chance to come and enjoy the outside space in the first of the new term’s regular Gardening Days. We’ll be aiming to spruce up the garden ahead of the annual Oktoberfest.

And Your Friends Need You! We are looking for someone to take on the Trustee role of Secretary, which has been carried out impeccably by Liz Holt (Y3 parent) for the last few years. Your responsibilities would be to participate in and take minutes for the FOJKPS council and Trustee meetings, ensuring the Friends adhere to their constitution, and to organise the Annual General Meeting (AGM). You’ll get to be closely involved in helping to shape our fun events to raise money for improvements to the school with a great group of people. Find out more about our activities here and let us know if you’re interested fojkps@gmail.com.
