Friday 18th October 2024

Dear Families,

I wanted to share some multi-generational research by Havard University exploring the connection between children doing household chores and later having professional success. The research has found a strong connection between doing home chores with success and happiness.  I'm just going to leave that one out there for discussion!

It's been a hub of activity in school this week, with author visits, bake sales. mental health workshops, Perform workshops (see pictures below) and Y5 preparations for Peter and the Wolves tomorrow (part of Herne Hill Music Festival). And meanwhile, all the fabulous curriculum learning continues. I was particularly impressed with the Year 6's who made stunning presentations about the Windrush, linked to their study of Benjamin Zephaniah's Windrush Generation. Several of them were even making their presentations dyslexia- friendly, a true testament to the inclusive culture we always aim for at JKPS.

Schönes Wochenende!

Patrick

Coming soon: this week, Mr Tom introduced the Kindness Challenge to the school.

Look out for sponsorship forms and a letter that will be sent out separately on Monday in order for children to complete their challenges and raise money for the NSPCC.

Mental Health and Well-Being

{item_alt_tag}

On Wednesday this week, all the teachers had a workshop about Zones of Regulation delivered by the Southwark Mental Health Team. There was great discussion on the signs of dysregulation and how we can support our children with being able to self-regulate using the Zones of Regulation. Zones of Regulation is a useful framework that enables children to identify and discuss often complex emotions. Next week the children will be having Zones of Regulation workshops and do join our workshop for parents on Tuesday morning.

Author Visit from Jennifer Bell

During Jennifer Bell's recent author visit to our school, she captivated students with her enchanting stories and insights into the world of writing. Bell shared her inspiration behind "Magicalia," discussing the blend of imagination and reality that defines her work.

She spoke to KS2 with interactive demonstrations, prompting students to share their own magical ideas. The magical conundrum was a highlight, she encouraged our aspiring young writers to embrace creativity and explore which magical creature could save them from a terrifying dilemma. Overall, her visit sparked excitement for storytelling and left students eager to dive into their own imaginative worlds.

Pre-Loved Uniform Sale - Thursday, 24th October

At JKPS we have a uniform so that children feel relaxed in their clothes and no one worries about pens or paint getting on their ‘best’ jumper or trousers. We encourage parents to take part in the pre-love uniform sale - this helps us minimise our environmental impact and also provides some funds via the Friends. As well as saving parents some money, it also helps us keep the school tidy - unclaimed lost property is passed to the uniform sale.

The next sale is after school on Thursday 24th Oct. There are plenty of polo t-shirts, trousers, skirts and pinafore. The Friends have been busy labelling items to make it easier to find what you need, buy pre-loved and save your pocket and the planet.

A massive thank you to all the parents who have come in to support with sorting and preparing the clothes for the sale.

Black History Month

As part of their Literacy Tree learning,  Year 6 have been learning about the powerful and important story of the Windrush Generation. Through creative PowerPoint presentations, they have learnt about the incredible contributions of Caribbean immigrants to British society whilst also learning about the hardships they faced upon arriving in the UK. From enduring harsh living conditions and discrimination to the painful injustices of the Windrush Scandal, this project will help our children understand both the challenges and the triumphs of this community.

Through this activity, the children celebrate the Windrush Generation's profound impact on British culture, while also reflecting on the lessons of resilience, equality, and justice. This is a wonderful opportunity for our young learners to appreciate the historical significance of these individuals and their contributions to shaping the modern UK, and it holds particular poignancy through our local context.
