Friday 2nd May 2025

Dear Families,

How lovely it has been to have our visiting scientists at school this week, inspiring scientists of the future! A massive thank you to those parents and members of our community who gave up their time to come in - such a valuable experience for the children. And whenever we celebrate science at JKPS, it always seems so fitting to know that our building was once a bustling science laboratory and work space of Sir James Black. Find out more about Sir James Black in this local news piece from 2017 - click here.

Summer term is always a busy term, particularly after half-term. Please see the performance dates below so you can add them to your diaries.

Have a wonderful bank holiday weekend!

Patrick

Science Week 2025

During Science Week, our students embarked on an exciting journey of discovery! From crafting imaginative science posters to engaging visits by real community scientists (truly inspiring!), the week culminated in a spectacular assembly where Francisco Diego wowed everyone with his cosmic insights.

Year 1 were lucky to have real scientists visit and explain their work to us! It was inspiring! We also then drew a scientist to address misconceptions and wrote them scientific questions to answer!

Y5 explored the fascinating world of toilets and the environment! They investigated what can and can’t be flushed by placing various items into bottles filled with water to simulate a flushing system. The children discovered that things like wipes and cotton buds don’t break down properly and can cause major blockages. This led to a discussion about fatbergs—huge masses formed from fat, oil, and non-flushable items—which can block sewers and cost the UK government millions to remove. Y5 learned how small actions at home can make a big difference to the environment and public services.

What's happening in school

Over the past week, Year 6 have unleashed their creativity as they immersed themselves into the dramatic world of The Lighthouse, a powerful short animation that sets the stage for our narrative writing journey. To fully immerse ourselves in the film’s intriguing atmosphere and cliff-top setting, we began by sketching our own lighthouses—towering structures braving the crashing waves and fierce winds. Take a look at some of our spectacular examples below:

It's been Year 1's turn to look at volume and capacity in their maths lessons this week. To introduce the topic, they had an introductory lesson outside! They used different size containers to see how many cups they needed to fill them up. They then ordered the containers from the ones that hold the least capacity to the ones that hold the most.

After-School Club

We couldn't not share these rather wonderful origami bunnies created in one of our after-school clubs on Thursday!

Meanwhile, at playtime...

At lunchtime today, some of our Year 3 children invited me to visit the 'Fairy City' that they had created, complete with train station, hospital and school. How wonderful!

Attendance

School attendance is mandatory for all students of compulsory school age. Whilst we understand that it isn't always possible to reach 100% attendance, we are fully committed to ensuring the highest levels of attendance to ensure we enable every student to meet their potential.

From the Anthem Community Council

Reminder: we would like to invite parents to a feedback session to share results of the parent survey on Thursday 8th May at 5:30pm in school. We hope this is also an opportunity to meet with you to update on the roles currently active in ACC and put some faces to names.

Friends Corner

Happy Harry Potter Day, we're looking forward to welcoming people later, and huge thanks to Ioana for all the hard work and prep for this community event. We are aware that it was very popular - as ever to run any event we rely on volunteers, and are grateful for everyone who contributes their time in whatever way.

At the AGM we discussed the work that is underway on the return of German interns to JKPS. If anyone would like to get more involved in this please get in touch with Claire Wren or Stef Weinmann.

And if this week of sunny weather has reminded you there is a need for summer uniform, please don't forget the pre-loved uniform sale. There will be one before half term (date TBD) but if the need is urgent please whatsapp Claire Wren (07730-433-519).

Dates for the Diary:

- Summer Picnic - Saturday 28th June

Also for the diary - 14th May at 6-7.30pm  ‘Summer Suppers’ Thermomix demo.
